Traditional Cyprus Recipes …
I’ve lived in both Greece and Cyprus and found that many of the recipes are the same. Some may have slightly different ingredients but basically are the same.
MOUSSAKA
A traditional Cyprus recipe which is often referred to as Greek Shepherds Pie is made in a variety of ways.
It can be made with meat (this can be replaced with quorn or soya) and aubergines or with a mixture of aubergines, courgettes and potatoes.

KEFTEDES
Authentic meatballs that melt in the mouth made in Cyprus and Greece. Can also be vegetarian (see recipe).
Party size nibbles and large meatballs which are excellent with salad, chips and humus.
YEMISTA
Yemista is a variety of vegetables stuffed.
Often used are courgettes, aubergines, tomatoes, potatoes, onions and peppers. These are stuffed with rice and herbs and then roasted in the oven.
AFELIA
(Marinated pork in wine)Afelia is a traditional dish eaten in both Greece and Cyprus.
HALLOUMI
Halloumi can be used in a variety of ways and is included in many recipes.
Cyprus has many other delicious cheeses but this one is unique to Cyprus and incredibly tasty!

FLAOUNES
These traditional Cypriot Easter Breads are very easy to make and totally delicious.
The mastica and special flaoune cheese gives that authentic taste.
Greek Easter Bread Recipe
TSOUREKI
In contrast to Flaounes which are Cypriot, Tsoureki originates from Greece and is widely available in bakers, supermarkets and cake shops in Cyprus.
Decorated with almonds and dyed red hard boiled eggs which represent the resurrection of Christ.
Recipes for New Year Cake, Christmas & Weddings
VASILOPITA
New Year cake traditionally eaten on the feast day of St Basil (Ayios Vasilis) which falls on the 1 January – New Years Day.
Very yummy plain cake, similar to panettoni and great for breakfast or with your morning coffee.

KOURABIEDES
Kourabiedes are Greek shortbread covered in icing sugar.
They are traditionally eaten for New Year and Christmas and for weddings and christenings (baptism).
LOUKOUMADES
These tasty Honey (Meli) Balls (small doughnuts) are very popular throughout Mediterranean countries.
They are great for adding inches to your waist and totally delicious full of walnuts, sweet syrup and cinnamon.
BAKLAVA
Baklava and Kataifi (known as shredded wheat as it resembles the small cereal) are some of the most popular cakes in Cyprus, Greece and throughout Europe and the Middle East.
There are many variations of the recipe. It’s mouth-wateringly delicious and easy to make in 30 mins!
GALOMBRAMA
Galombrama translates to ‘Good Thing’ which it really is 🙂
There are a variety of ways to make this delicious cake which is very easy to make and excellent with coffee or tea at any time of the day.
