Paphos

Paphos ~ Birthplace of Aphrodite

The city of Paphos is a Unesco World Heritage Site with many architectural and archaeological sites to explore. A good way to get to know Paphos is to take a trip on an open top double decker red bus. See the Temple of Aphrodite, St. Paul’s Pillar, the castle and  beautiful old harbour.

Paphos has two areas which are 3km apart.  Kato (Lower) and Ktima (Upper – which is inland). Ktima Pafos is famous for the many restaurants which offer Cypriot cuisine and Kato (Lower) Pafos is the more touristic area with a palm tree lined promenade and an abundance of open air cafes, restaurants.

Every year the Aphrodite Festival of international opera is held under the stars at the Medieval Castle in the harbor. For each performance there are 2,500 seats.

stgeorgeschurch The district of Paphos includes the popular resorts of Coral Bay and St George’s where you will find St George’s Fish Taverna.  See Paphos Restaurants

Other popular resorts are the town of Polis and Latchi with it’s lovely harbor and the stunning Akamas Peninsula.

Paphos also has many lovely hotelsvillas and spa resorts and top golf courses.

Petra Tou Romiou

Nearby is Petra Tou Romiou, the birthplace of Aphrodite and a popular place for weddings.  This is Aphrodite territory, full of the myths and legends of the famous goddess.

Aphrodite's rock cyprusAncient legend has it that folk-hero Digenis Aakritas hurled a large rock (petra) at the Saracens during a battle.  The rock landed by the sea, hence the name of Petra Tou Romiou – in Greek this means ‘Rock of the Greek’.

Attractions in Paphos

There are many more incredible sites and places to visit in and around Pafos. The Temple of Aphrodite at Kouklia village is just 14 km east of Pafos and the Sacred Garden of Aphrodite is 3 km east of Pafos at Yeroskipou village.

The famous Springs of Peyeia are in the village square just 19km north-west of Pafos.

Weather In Cyprus

Weather In Cyprus

The weather in Cyprus is one of the best in the world and attracts many visitors to its shores every year.

Cyprus is a year-round destination with long sunny days and warm evenings.

If you don’t like the heat the best time to visit is in May or late September or October.

Spring Weather in Cyprus

Troodos KykkosThis is one of the best times to visit Cyprus. The island is covered with wild flowers and the scent of blossoms and flowers fills the air.

In many northern European countries February is the coldest month. Temperatures drop to 2 or 3 C but in Cyprus it’s the beginning of Spring.

Some people even take a dip in the sparkling blue sea. Still a tad cold for me but as temperatures are normally in the early 20s, it’s a lot warmer than other parts of Europe.

The days are warm and sunny but it’s not too hot so great for exploring the natural beauty of the island. The Akamas Peninsula is ideal  for nature rambles, walking holidays, cycling and hiking.

During March it’s possible to ski on the Troodos mountains during the morning and swim during the afternoon.

The resorts of Paphos and Limassol are not far away and many enjoy swimming at this time of the year and then heading for the mountains.

Summer Weather in Cyprus

summer weather in cyprusEveryone loves the summer and this is when the majority of tourists descend upon the island.

Nicosia can become unbearably hot and many people vacate their city homes during the summer months and head for the cooler, fresher air of the Troödos mountains or nearby beaches.

The weather is still hot in September and it’s time to celebrate the harvesting of grapes in the villages and towns across Cyprus.

The Limasssol Wine Festival is held every year at the end of August / beginning of September and lasts for over a week.

Autumn Weather in Cyprus

pomegranates for christmasDuring October and November the leaves start changing to red and gold and the weather in Cyprus changes.  The days are still hot enough for a swim but the nights are cooling down so a light jacket or heavy cardigan is needed.

Pomegranates (Greek ρόδι  – pronounced rothee) grow  in abundance at this time of the year.   In the Greek myth of Persephone the seeds of the fruit are used to explain the changing seasons.  This juicy and very mystical fruit is often used in Greek Orthodox festivals.

Winter Weather in Cyprus

This is the time when many tourists escape the cold winter days and head for the island. Many come to celebrate Christmas and the New Year and stay for a couple of months.

troodosmountainsIn January there is sometimes a little rain and the temperature is around 18 – 20 C during the day but nights can be a little chilly. The temperature by the sea is very mild during the winter months of December and January.

From January to March the mountains are covered with snow for up to four or five months, so for those who love to ski this is the ideal time to visit the Troodos mountains.

Aphrodite Greek Goddess

Aphrodite Greek Goddess of Love & Beauty

Aphrodite Greek Goddess

Aphrodite Greek GoddessThe Birth of Aphrodite – According to Hesiodus, Kronos castrated his father Uranus and threw his genitals into the sea. A white foam appeared and the beautiful goddess emerged from the sea at Petra Tou Romiou (Rock of the Greek) Aphrodite Rock in Pafos.

The name of Aphrodite greek goddess comes from the greek word afros meaning foam. The legend and cult of this beautiful goddess linger on in her magical playground in Cyprus.

Aphrodites Rock, Petra Tou Romiou, CyprusThe nearby village of Kouklia (Palaipafos – Old Pafos) is where the 12th century B.C. Temple of Aphrodite once stood.

In its place stands the church of Panagia Aphroditissa.

The ruins of the sanctuary date back to the 12th century BC and were a place of worship until the 3rd/4th century AD.

Excavations continue in and around the ruins of the town and necropolis.

There is also a museum in a nearby house which you can visit from 9.00am – 4.00pm Tel: 26432180.

The village of ‘Yeroskipos’ was the Greek goddess’s garden and this is where she played and loved.

It’s also where pilgrims came to worship the goddess with gifts of flowers and fruits.

The word ‘Yeroskipos’ in Greek means Holy Garden ‘yeros’ = holy and ‘kipos’ = garden

Aphrodite Greek Goddess and Adonis

One of the lovers of the goddess was Adonis.  Legend has it that whilst out hunting in the Akamas Peninsula,  he stopped for a drink of water.

On seeing the naked goddess bathing in a grotto surrounded by fig trees, he immediately fell in love with her. They then became passionate lovers.

Playground of Aphrodite Greek Goddess

This area is also known as the ‘playground’ of the goddess and the famous ‘Baths of Aphrodite’ are to be found between Polis and Cape Arnaout.

For those wishing to visit the baths during the summer the bus leaves from the town of Polis at 10.00am, Noon and 3.00pm.

Take a 4WD Jeep Safari and on your way visit the legendary Baths of Aphrodite and Lara Bay.

As  patron of the island it’s hardly surprising that the most popular trails to take are the Aphrodite Trail and the trail of her lover Adonis.

Both start at the Baths of Aphrodite and take approximately 3 hours.

Other trails to take are Smigies Trail which starts at Smigies Picnic Site, Pissouromouttis Trail also from the picnic site and Kathikas Trail from Kathika onto Pegeia.

This is one of the most beautiful areas of the island boasting narrow deep valleys, caves, beautiful beaches and over 500 different types of plants.

In Spring the Akamas is carpeted with flora and fauna and one of the best locations for cycling, walking and hiking.

On your way to Pafos you pass the Akrotiri British base which covers a large and very beautiful area of the island.

Nearby is Kolossi Castle, Ancient Kourion and the Sanctuary of Apollo (Apollon Ylatis – god of the woodland) and protector of Kourion.

aphroditesrockA little further on and you come to Aphrodite Beach at Petra tou Romio, birthplace of Aphrodite.

Don’t forget, if you’re driving from Lemesos (Limassol) to Pafos be sure to take the old road and not the motorway, otherwise you’ll miss all of this!

The festival of Aphrodite was known as Aphrodisia and her name lives on in the love potion we know today as Aphrodisiac.

It’s easy to fall in love with the beautiful island of Aphrodite and easy to understand why so many people get married, honeymoon here and return every year.
