St Hilarion Castle Kyrenia Cyprus

Visit St Hilarion Castle Kyrenia Cyprus

sthilarioncastleSt Hilarion Castle is in Kyrenia in Northern Cyprus.

The castle sits high on a mountain range overlooking Kyrenia.

This once luxurious Crusader fortress is one of the most stunning of ruined castles and well worth a visit.

Be prepared for a very steep climb to the highest tower so not for the faint hearted.

  • You definitely need to be quite fit to do this.
  • Sensible shoes are advised.
  • There are many, many steps to climb and some are very narrow.
  • There is a handrail next to the steps for health and safety reasons.

Once at the top you will be rewarded with amazing panaromic views so it’s well worth the effort.

If you suffer with vertigo, the climb may not be for you.

St Hilarion Castle Kyrenia Cyprus …

Getting Here :

There are many tours which include a trip to the castle but if you go alone you will need a car.

  • There are many parking spaces near the entrance.
  • Ticket costs  3 euros (5TL)
  • It’s about a  20 minute drive from Nicosia (Lefkosia) on the Northern side of the island.
  • You will need your passport if coming from the south of the island.

Legend of the Pentadaktylos Mountains

The Pentadaktylos (five finger mountains) are the western half of the Kyrenia Mountains. There are many legends associated with the five finger projections.

One is that Digenis Akritas (who is well known for the large rock he threw at the invading Saracen ships which landed in the sea at Paphos).

Digenis Akritas was also holding onto these mountains and the five finger projections are said to be his handprint.

Cyprus Currency

The Cyprus Currency is the Euro

On 1st January 2008 the Cyprus currency changed from the Cyprus Pound (CYP) to the Euro.

The day this happened in Cyprus is called E-day (Σ) and from this date onwards, withdrawals from bank accounts have only been in the euro.

The Cyprus Currency Today!

At the moment the economy is not so good in many countried.

For the past few years countries such as Greece, Portugal, Spain and many more are suffering extreme hardship.

The Cypriot economy was doing well for a long time.

However, in March 2013 the country endured a bailout.

Financial restrictions were imposed by the government.

In March 2013 the Cyprus government restructured its biggest banks to prevent the island’s economic collapse.

On 25 March 2013, a €10 billion bailout was announced. In return Cyprus had to agree to close  the Laiki Bank (Cyprus Popular Bank) which is the second largest bank on the island.

This resulted in losses of up to 40pc on large depositors and guaranteed all deposits up to €100,000. Many people lost their savings and as quoted in the New York Times on 9 July 2013

‘Tangled in restrictions imposed in March as part of a bailout for the country’s ailing banks, a euro in Cyprus is no longer the same as one in France, Germany or Greece.

“A Cyprus euro is a second-class euro,” said Mr. Loucaides, the managing director of the Cyprus Trading Corporation”.

New York Times

Cypriots used to enjoy one of the highest standards of living in the EU, and unemployment was low.

However, since the economic crisis things are not so good and unemployment is now very high.

The legal system is based on the British legal system which Cyprus inherited from the UK as a result of British Colonial rule.

Best Larnaca Restaurants ?

The area around Finikoudes Beach has many Larnaca restaurants serving traditional food such as moussaka, keftedes and calamari.

Fast food is available in Cyprus in the form of take-away kebabs etc which are healthy and have been around for year.

McDonalds arrived in Larnaca in 2007 and is right on Finikoudes promenade at 30-32 Athinon. In an excellent location overlooking the beach with chairs and tables on the terrace.

  • Great for McDonald fans and there’s also a twist with a few Greek dishes included!

MIlizis and Monte Carlo

by Sandra Paul
(Scotland UK)

As mentioned above Milizis is an excellent traditional Cypriot restaurant tavas and kleftiko both excellent. Always busy at weekends and have over the twenty two years that we have been going have found it best to book.

Monte Carlo

Also love the Monte Carlo, it is like sitting in a boat if you get a window seat as it is built out over the water. Food is very nice, service is always good and always nice to receive a complimentary home made cyprus sweet and a liquer.

Salamis Mackenzie Beach

by Sandra Paul
(Edinburgh Scotland)

I have done a review on Milizis and Monte Carlo but another favourite restaurant of mine is Salamis at the Mackenzie Beach area of Larnaca. This restaurant was there when I first went to Cyprus over twenty years ago and is still going. If you enjoy a steak they know how to cook them properly which you cannot always say in some restaurants.

Sometimes there is some entertainment like a background singer which is nice for a change. Nice friendly and helpful staff, what more can I say thumbs up for me.

Lily Wong Chinese Restaurant, Larnaca Dhekelia Road

by Gordon Whimmer
(Oroklini)

Food is excellent as well as service. The atmosphere is Chinese and friendly. Try it.

by Olga

I live in Larnaca where i haqve tried all chinese restaurants and i was dissapointet until friends told me about Lily Wong on the Dhekelia road.

I thought its far from the town, but when I desperately wanted chinese so I said I will give it a try . The atmosphere is very Chinese and the food is excellent. I found dishes that no other restaurant does like my favorite hot and sour cabbage chicken and prawns with mango sauce and octopus with black bean sauce.

by Maria

I think is the best chinese I ever had. The food is very very good. Excellent aromatic Peking duck, fantastic sweet and sour chicken, crispy chili beef is really crispy and all sizzling dishes are awfully tasty.

Coast of India Pervolia Village Larnaka Cyprus

The restaurant has a great ambiance and we always look forward to delicious curries and a warm welcome.
