28 October – OCHI DAY (National Day)

Ochi Day is a public holiday celebrated every year. Since 1942 the day has been celebrated as a public holiday with parades and many places will be closed.

This is the day when Greeks said NO (ochi) to Mussolini on 28 October 1940. The Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas’ rejected the ultimatum made by Mussolini.

Apollon October Concerts - Feast of the Sense

Internationally renowned musicians soprano Sharon Rostorf-Zamir and pianist Hagai Yodan will open the Apollon October Concerts with performances at Casteliotissa, Nicosia on October 15 and at the Markideon Theatre in Paphos on October 16 under the auspices of the Embassy of Israel.

The second set of concerts, under the auspices of the Embassy of Sweden will be given by cellist Mats Lidström on October 29 and October 30 at Casteliotissa and at the Hadjiantonas Winery in Limassol, both beginning at 8pm. The 2nd event at the Hadjiantonas Winery is a Feast of the Senses and after the short recital will include wine tasting with finger food and an art exhibition.

The hot summer month of June is when the works of William Shakespeare are performed for three days at the open-air ancient amphitheatre of Courion.

The annual performance is held in late June and is performed by local amateur actors. All profits go to local charities.

The ancient site of Kourion is one of the most spectacular archaeological sites on the island and excavations continue to reveal impressive new treasures . It is noted in particular for its magnificent Greco - Roman Theatre.

Street Life Festival started in 2007 and is considered to be the biggest annual festival organised in the old town of Limassol.

More than 10.000 visitors will fill the popular streets of Saripolou and Athenon, in the old town.

Anthestiria ~ Flower Festival

During the month of May the return of spring is celebrated with Anthestiria - Flower Festival ~ (Anthestiria comes from the Greek word anthos that means “flower”).

The festival has it’s roots in the ancient festival held in Athens in honor of Dionysus, the god of wine and fertility. Anthestiria was also the carnivals of souls, plants and flowers to celebrate the re-birth of man and nature.

Anthestiria events in Limassol are usually held in the center of the tourist area of Yermasoyia. In Paphos the main venue is the coastal avenue as far as the old harbor of Kato Paphos, and in Larnaka you can watch the flower parade along the seafront promenade of Finikoudes.

IV Paphos International Children’s Festival

The IV Pafos International Childrens Festival is going to take place on the 2nd of May 2015 at the International School of Paphos.

Organized by the Cyprus-Russian Association of Pafos with the support of The International School of Pafos (ISOP), Pafos Municipality, Pafos Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Pafos2017 Commitee.

This year the theme for the festival is going to be “Heart of Gold”. On the 2nd of May 2015 The International School of Paphos will host the art exhibition, the award ceremony, “The Tree of Kindness” fund raising and the Gala Concert.

The 15th International Pharos Chamber Music Festival takes place between the 20 May and 2 June 2015.

Some of the most remarkable artists on the international music scene will perform for nine concerts in the Royal Manor House in Kouklia.

This is one of the finest surviving monuments of Frankish architecture in Cyprus and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Shoe Factory is a contemporary recital venue situated in Ermou Street near the buffer zone in Nicosia.

Galombrama Recipe ~ (Semolina Cake)

Galombrama translates to ‘Good Thing’ which it really is, it’s also very easy to make.

There are a variety of ways to make this cake so you can add or take things away as you prefer.

If you make too much syrup just pop the left overs into the fridge and keep it for the next cake you make.

Galombrama Recipe

First make the syrup

Add the following to a pan…

2 cups of water
2 cups of sugar
cinammon sticks
8 drops of lemon juice (or add to taste)

Ingredients for Galombrama

4 eggs
1 cup of olive oil / sunflower oil or butter
1 orange
2 or 3 tears of mastica / mastiha (if you like)
2 tspns baking powder
500 gms semolina
Almonds for decoration (halved and skinned)

Preparation

1. Lighty oil a large dish and then grind mastica with a little sugar until a powder.
2. Separate the eggs and mix yolks.
3. Add warmed butter or olive oil to eggs then slowly add the semolina, mastica and baking powder.
4. Mix egg whites, then slowly fold into the egg and oil/butter mixture.
5. Pour into dish and cook for 45mins on 180c
6. Take out of the oven and pour the cooled syrup over the hot cake and leave to rest.

I think the cake tastes better when cooled down, and it’s even better the next day or the day after. Enjoy!
