Lania Cyprus Village
Lania Cyprus is a wine growing village situated at the foot of the Troodos mountains on the way to Platres. One of 14 Commandaria villages, Lania is located 27km north of Limassol and south of the Troodos Mountains.
Lania Village has been an artists haven since the 1960s and is full of shops selling their works. P Karseras winery is nearby in Doros Village and there’s free wine tasting of Commandaria wine.
Although Commandaria is now produced on a large scale these villages are the designated zone of origin.
- Richard the Lionheart is said to have planted an Oak Tree in the village and was married in the lovely church in Limassol Old Town to Berengaria of Navarre.
- The grapes used for this amber colored wine are the sun-dried grapes of the varieties Xynisteri and Mavro.
- As well as wine the village also produces the potent local drink of Zivania and the dessert wine Commandaria.
- The delicious grape flavored bechemel type Sousouko is also made here.
Lania Cyprus Village
The name of Lania village is said to originate from Lania the daughter of Dionysos the Greek God of wine.
The village is full of narrow lanes and traditional stone houses and cottages and it is also known as an artist’s village. Several artists live here and have studios show-casing their work which is for sale.
The focus of village life is on the village square where you will find the museum a lovely church and tavernas.
