Larnaca (Larnaka) Cyprus
The laid back resort of Larnaca has a population of 46,700 and was built on the ancient city of Kition (birthplace of the stoic philosopher Zeno) who lived in the 4th century.
Zeno was so inspired by the works of Socrates that he founded the Stoic School of philosophy in Athens.
The city center is just a ten minute drive from Larnaca airport and a large salt lake is just a few minutes from the airport.
Larnaca has a huge variety of bars, restaurants and cafes along the famous Finikoudes promenade next to Finikoudes beach.
Dramatic changes to this lovely city are in the pipeline and include a proposed new championship golf course and country club at Tersefanou village.
If you like visiting Cyprus villages, the lovely village of Kalavasos is just 42 km southwest of Larnaca.
Finikoudes Promenade
Larnaca seafront is lined with palm trees (hence the name Finikoudes, which means palm trees) and trendy bars. You can enjoy good food, swim, shop and immerse yourself in the history of the island.
The five miles of sandy beaches which stretch to Dhekelia have been awarded the highly respected blue flag of quality. There are many lovely beach-side hotels where you can relax, swim, laze on the beach and then dine al fresco under the stars.
Not far from Finikoudes beach and promenade is the lovely Larnaca Marina.
At the other end of the promenade on the way to Mackenzie beach is a 17th century Fort which was used as a prison during the British colonial years.
St Lazarus – Patron Saint of Larnaca
In the old town, not far from the port in the area known as Scala, is the church of St Lazarus who is said to have been resurrected from the dead by Christ.
Lazarus brought Christianity to ancient Kition, and was later ordained Bishop of Kition, the first Christian Archbishop.
Every year the resurrection of Lazarus is re-enacted by children in St Lazarus’s Church in Plateia Ayiou Lazarou.
Larnaca Local Market
The local daily market on Leontos Sofou Street opens early in the morning until 1.00pm.
The nearby Sunday Market is also very popular and well worth a visit – open from 10.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m.
