The following pastries and cakes are very easy to make, but if you don’t have the time, they can be bought in the local zacharoplasteion (patisserie) or supermarket.
The most popular Greek desserts in Cyprus are a mixture of honey and almonds, thin crisp filo pastry with the slightest hint of rose.
Those that enjoy these tasty dishes are spoilt for choice with all these cakes placed in tempting trays in restaurants and homes.
Greek Pastries and Cakes
Kataifi, Shamali which is also called Kalo Prama (in Greek it means good thing and is one of my favorites 🙂 ) and Bougatsa which are heavenly!
Nuts such as almonds, hazelnuts and walnuts are widely used and Karythopita (walnut cake) is a huge favorite. It goes so well with coffee and can be eaten for breakfast or any time of the day.
Melomakarona
These small honey drenched buns are decadently delicious.
Rose flavored ice cream and fresh figs laced with honey and wine are a joy to eat on a hot summer day.
There are many so wonderful Cypriot Greek desserts which are quite easy to make.
Kourabiedes
Kourabiedes are Greek shortbread covered in icing sugar.
They are traditionally eaten for New Year and Christmas and for weddings and christenings (baptism).
Loukoumades
These tasty Honey (Meli) Balls (small doughnuts) are very popular throughout Mediterranean countries.
They are great for adding inches to your waist and totally delicious full of walnuts, sweet syrup and cinnamon.
Galombrama (Kalo Prama)
Galombrama translates to ‘Good Thing’ which it really is.
There are a variety of ways to make this delicious cake which is very easy to make and excellent with coffee or tea at any time of the day.
Baklava
We all love these tasty treats which add inches to the waistline!
Baklava is one of the most delicious and fattening of them all and can be found all over Cyprus and Greece.
Also in many other parts of the Middle East this lovely dessert is made with filo pastry, nuts, spices and loads of lovely rose or orange scented syrup.
Glyka ~ Greek Desserts in Cyprus
In Cyprus and Greece it is the tradition to offer visitors a glyka (conserved fruit) with Greek coffee and a glass of water.
