Things to do in Cyprus in January
After all the excitement of Christmas and New Year, Epiphany on the 6 January marks the end of the 12 days of Christmas. This is a very religious festival in the Orthdox religion as it is the day Jesus was baptized. Thus the association with the blessing of the water.
The festival includes diving into the cold sea and retrieving the cross the Priests throw in to bless the sea. Church services start very early and the blessing normally begins at 10.00am. The people who retrieve the cross are blessed with good luck for the year.
